Trails & Paths

Cart paths, walking paths and trails that stay put.

Most of our work is paths people use every day: a cart route to the course, a DG path to the dock, a greenbelt trail the HOA is tired of patching. Built with the drainage designed in.

Golf cart paths

Built for carts, mowers and May storms.

Horseshoe Bay runs on golf carts, and most cart paths fail the same way: thin gravel on dirt, no crown, water running straight down the middle. We build cart paths like small roads.

  • 6–8 ft wide, 4–6 in. compacted base in lifts
  • 2–3 in. stabilized decomposed granite surface
  • 2% crown with swales and rock outlets
  • Steel or stone edging, concrete aprons on steep turns
  • Routed around oaks and to your POA's ACC rules
Cross-section of a TX Trailcraft path: crowned stabilized DG over compacted base and fabric on native granite or caliche, with a side swale and rock outlet. 1 2 3 4 5
  1. Stabilized DG, 2–3 in., 2% crown. Binder locks the surface so spring storms don't wash it out.
  2. Compacted base, 4–6 in. Rolled in lifts to carry carts and mowers.
  3. Fabric separator. Keeps base rock from sinking into the subgrade.
  4. Native granite or caliche. We read the ground on site before we design.
  5. Swale and rock outlet. Water leaves on our terms.
Walking paths

Garden paths, lake paths, greenbelt trails.

From a 60-foot DG path to the fire pit to miles of HOA greenbelt trail, the build changes but the standard doesn't.

DG PATH

Stabilized decomposed granite

Firm, ADA-friendly, Hill Country color. Stabilizer binds the surface so it doesn't track into the house or wash away.

Typical$7.50–10 / sq ft
NATURAL TRAIL

Machine-cut walking trail

3–4 ft, outsloped, armored with native rock where it climbs. Right for acreage, nature areas and HOA common land.

Typical$8–14 / ft
REBUILD

HOA path renovation

Regrade, new base, resurface and add drainage outlets on paths that keep rutting. Phased budgets for board approval.

Typical$5–8 / sq ft
Erosion & drainage

The Storm-Proof package.

Add it to any path or trail, or call us when water is already cutting through your property. Thin Hill Country soil sheds water fast; we give it somewhere to go.

Drainage workTypical price
Rolling dip or water barTurns water off a trail or ranch road before it gains speed$175–450 each
Rock check damSlows water in a gully so it drops sediment instead of cutting deeper$400–950 each
Grass or rock-lined swaleA shallow channel that carries runoff across the lot$12–28 / ft
Dry creek bedRock channel that handles storm flow and looks like it belongs$45–90 / ft
French drainGravel and pipe for wet spots and foundations; more in solid rock$32–55 / ft
Culvert crossingPipe with rock headwalls where a path or road crosses a draw$1,200–3,500

Bundled with a path build, drainage items share mobilization and usually cost less than doing them separately.

Bike trails

Singletrack, flow and jump lines.

This is where the skills come from. Riders find every mistake in a trail, and storms find the rest. We build singletrack, flow trails with berms and rollers, jump lines and skills areas on private land, camps and parks, often with trail design by THCMTB.

  • Machine-built singletrack $8–14 / ft
  • Flow trail with berms and rollers $14–25 / ft
  • Jump lines and features $20–40 / ft or per feature
  • Trail renovation and reroutes project quote
Plan a trail
Side profile of a flow trail: rollers, a tabletop jump, a grade reversal that sheds water, and an armored rock section. 1 2 3 4
  1. Rollers and berms. Shaped by machine, finished by hand, packed tight.
  2. Jumps and tabletops. Sized to the riders who will use them.
  3. Grade reversals. Every dip sheds water off the tread before it builds speed.
  4. Rock armoring. Native rock where the trail crosses draws or climbs.

Questions

Paths & trails FAQ

Concrete or decomposed granite for a cart path?

Concrete costs more, sheds all its water onto the ground next to it and adds impervious cover. Stabilized DG over a compacted base looks like the Hill Country, drains through and can be patched. For most estate and POA cart routes we recommend DG with concrete aprons where carts turn or climb steep grades.

Will a DG path wash out?

Plain DG on a flat grade with no base will. Stabilized DG at 2 to 3 inches over a compacted base, with a crown and planned water exits, holds up to heavy spring storms. Steep pitches get stone steps, armoring or a concrete strip.

Can you fix an existing path that keeps eroding?

Yes, and it's some of our most common work. We regrade, rebuild the base, add rolling dips or swales and resurface, often for less than a new path.

Do you need a permit?

Most residential paths don't. Larger disturbances inside the Highland Lakes watershed can trigger permit review, so we size and phase jobs with that in mind and tell you up front.

Do you build mountain bike trails?

Yes: machine-built singletrack, flow trails, jump lines and skills areas for private land, camps and parks. Design is often done with THCMTB.

Got a path that keeps washing out?
